The Gospel in Every Language: A Reflection for Hangeul Day

The Gospel in Every Language: A Reflection for Hangeul Day

Every year on October 9th, Korea celebrates Hangeul Day (한글날) — the day King Sejong the Great introduced Hangeul, the Korean alphabet. It’s a day that reminds us not just of linguistic pride, but of the creativity and intention behind how people communicate truth.

King Sejong created Hangeul so that everyone — not just scholars — could read, write, and understand knowledge for themselves. That heart for accessibility and empowerment has always inspired me as a designer. Because design, at its core, is also about making ideas understandable and accessible to everyone.

Seeing the name 예수 (Jesus) written in Hangeul is powerful — it’s more than just letters; it’s a reminder that His name transcends every alphabet, every tongue, and every nation.

As a Korean American, I’ve always loved how beautifully structured Hangeul is. Every letter is intentional. Every combination has meaning. It’s logical yet artistic, simple yet powerful. There’s something profound about a language created out of love for people — a desire for everyone to be able to read and express themselves.

That’s why Hangeul Day resonates deeply with me, especially through the lens of faith. As believers, we know that God’s Word — the Logos — is the ultimate form of communication. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1) Just as Hangeul was created to bring understanding to a nation, God gave us His Word to bring understanding and light to the world.

In designing pieces that include Korean typography, like our Christ Over Nations – Korea tee, I wanted to honor that same spirit — the beauty of the Korean language and the truth it can carry. Seeing the name 예수 (Jesus) written in Hangeul is powerful — it’s more than just letters; it’s a reminder that His name transcends every alphabet, every tongue, and every nation.

There’s something profound about a language created out of love for people — a desire for everyone to be able to read and express themselves.

So today, as we celebrate Hangeul Day, we honor not only a language but a legacy — one that values clarity, creativity, and compassion for others. And as a faith-driven brand, we celebrate the ultimate Word — the name above all names — being declared in every language under heaven.

Happy Hangeul Day.
예수님의 이름이 모든 나라와 언어 위에 높임 받기를.
(May the name of Jesus be lifted high in every nation and language.)
